USPACE - Not reinventing the wheel
but using the wheels to make a better vehicle: the use of Web 2.0 to
enhance the support Foundation Degree students undertaking work-based
learning will take place at the University of Plymouth on
Wednesday 19 May 2010. It will examine new and emerging Web 2.0
technologies which have the potential to enhance and transform the
learner experience and to develop the 21st century employability skills
of communication, participation, networking and sharing.
The workshop is aimed at academic and professional staff in HE and HE
in FE who would like to use easily employed Web 2.0 technologies to
support learners in work-based learning. It will look at:
• the experiences of the UsPaCe project
• Web 2.0 tools to support learning
• digital literacies and their role in learning and employability
• perceptions of learners’ digital literacies
• delegates’ experiences of technology to support work based learners.
The JISC funded UsPaCe project integrated the Web2.0 technologies of
social bookmarking, social networking and personalised web browsing
pages incorporating gadgets and RSS feeds to create a tool for
communication, personal development planning, group work and resource
sharing. The result was a personalised learning environment to support
UPC students in work based learning which enabled enhanced flexibility
and choice, work force development and support of diverse learner needs.
CETL Student Network: June 16th/17th 2008 Conference, University of Plymouth

‘Staff-Student Collaborations: Partnerships within CETLs’.
Delegates from National CETLs, of both staff and students, gathered to hear about the practice of staff and student partnerships and collaborations. We encouraged individuals and groups to come and tell delegates about new innovations and good practice systems they have developed and are using that might benefit others.
With well over 70 delegates in attendance at our previous events, it is a great opportunity to network with others doing similar work at a whole range of different institutions and disciplines.

UPC Winter Conference 8th November
This October marked the 3rd birthday of the UPC faculty, as such it was an appropriate time to reflect upon the successes and achievements of UPC, as well as looking forward and building on the achievements of UPC partner college staff. The programme for the day included sessions from partner college staff, project leaders and break out sessions for Subject Forums and the Administrators community. We were also delighted to welcome Francis Cambrook, the new SW regional director of FDF to share her visions on the future development of Foundation Degrees, and Ian Lindsay from the Higher Education Academy who ran a session on how partner college staff can utilise the HEA. Mark Stone will give the conference the latest updates on HELP CETL developments and Mike Peters was there to provide demonstrations on the power of the Knowledge Exchange Network (KEN).
The UPC Winter Conference was held on Wednesday 8th November 2006 at Future Inn, Plymouth. Claire Gray was coordinating this event.

UPC Blended Learning Conference 20th October - 10am
The University of Plymouth Colleges and HELP CETL held a Blended
Learning Conference on Friday 20th October, at St Mellion from 10am. The
coordinator of the conference Julie Johns (E-Learning Coordinator)
hoped the day would be the following "a chance to share innovative
Blended Learning and good practise across the partnership. It will give
us the opportunity to see how Blended Learning has effected curriculum
mechanisms and the bringing of people together can lead to us sharing
agendas and strategies".
A home for UPC staff on the Plymouth Campus, including good coffee..
The Higher Education Learning
Partnerships [ HELP ] Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning [
CETL ] has now moved into its planned for, purpose built accommodation.
This is located above the Freshlings Nursery on the Plymouth campus.
This space is an exciting development for University of Plymouth
Colleges [ UPC ] as the space offers a range of facilities and
opportunities to support colleagues involved in the delivery and
development of HE in FE provision.
Since UPC became a Faculty in 2003 the amount of collaborative work that it supports and facilitates across the region has expanded from what was already a substantial level. This has meant that there have been an ever increasing number of UPC colleagues visiting the campus. These visitors have, until now, had no dedicated space designed and provided for them. The HELP CETL investment is working to address this.
Drop in facilities
The HELP CETL now includes a drop in space where there are open access space PCs available along with open port network points for laptop users. There is also space to store or leave your files or other heavy items rather than carry these everywhere you go on campus. The CETL team will be monitoring use of the facility and working to make it suit your needs. As well as desks, there are also comfortable chairs, sofas and nice coffee if you just want to talk to colleagues or grab a quiet moment between meetings.
Bookable meeting room
This facility allows UPC colleagues to
call and host meetings on the Plymouth campus in their own space, where
they can be in control of the event. The room includes: movable tables,
open port network points, a ceiling mounted data projector and
interactive white board. For information on using this space, please
contact Amy Pethick on 01752238653 or amy.pethick@plymouth.ac.uk
Video Conferencing facility
This space allows for UPC colleagues to use video services to work at a distance with members of the HELP CETL and UPC teams. It also allows for the use of video services to work with colleagues nationally and internationally when in Plymouth. This facility is linked to a HELP CETL developmental initiative to enhance the video conferencing infrastructure and support across the region.
Multiple Centres for Excellence
While this new space offers more opportunities to work with members of the HELP CETL and UPC teams, the building also hosts:
The Sustainable Futures CETL is located in an adjacent space [phone and web link]. The bringing together of the University of Plymouth CETLs, adjacent to the GEES Subject Centre [phone and web link], offers UPC staff easy access to a wide range of teaching and learning development and support services in close proximity. The HELP CETL team are more than happy to assist UPC colleagues in making connections with these other services.
CETL National Student Network Meeting
The CETL National Student Network meeting took place on Thursday 24th August, at the Enquiry Based Learning CETL in Manchester.
The aim of a network is to provide a forum for these essential staff members to discuss their ideas and their problems and to share valuable advice and insight into the opportunities available to students within other HE institutions
The network has decided to begin formalising the way in which it is organised and so all students/student representatives in CETLs are invited to the next CETL National Student Network meeting which is taking place in Birmingham on the 18th October, please see article in Future Events.
